Animal shelter inches toward completion

Seneca SC, April 21, 2008 - It has taken several years to go from plans to clearing and grading, but the building construction phase is now fast approaching. Several major hold-ups have contributed to the delays. One of them was the expansion of the original design to accommodate the Oconee Humane Society’s office, retail and training facilities within the animal shelter. Another reason was the discovery of a debris field underneath the existing Butler type building shell that was to serve as the basis for the shelter. This meant having to remove the building from the site and moving the new shelter footprint away from unstable ground. Then, in order to provide adequate space for a separate Humane Society building some time in the future, re-surveying had to be done that also included room for a Pet Memorial Garden. But all is now done and we are ready to build.

J Davis Construction of Westminster will be constructing the shelter and expects to finish the project in six to nine months from the actual start date. After construction is completed, the current facility on Camp Road in Walhalla will be packed up and moved to the new shelter at 1925 Sandifer Boulevard, Route 123, in Seneca. If all goes according to plan, the new shelter should be open for business some time in the spring of 2009. That opening will mark the completion of an arduous journey that will have lasted almost ten years but also marks the beginning of a working relationship between Oconee County Animal Control and the Humane Society.
