Spay / Neuter
Programs
It is common knowledge in the animal control industry
that human population and the population of stray or abandoned animals
are in a complimentary relationship; as one goes up or down, so does the
other. In the past
twenty years the human population of Oconee County
roughly doubled while the stray and abandoned animal population has
remained approximately the same. This means the long and sustained
spay/neuter efforts of the Oconee Humane Society ’s are paying
off. But we have a long way to go.
The number of animals deposited at the Oconee County shelter annually
runs right around 4,600. That is an average of almost 18 animals each
and every day the shelter is open for business. Considering the current
animal shelter facilities include about 20 cat cages and 30 dog runs,
you can surmise what happens to new arrivals. While efforts are made to
adopt out every animal that arrives at the shelter, the sad truth is
that just does not happen. Some are returned to owners, others are held
for court cases, still others too sick or dangerous to be adopted out.
The unpleasant factor that keeps the shelter full but not overcrowded is
euthanasia. Even while performed in a respectful and most humane manner,
it still takes a life. This is what drives our cause, to euthanize as
few animals as possible. It is also the reason spay/neuter programs are
at the core of our efforts to control the pet population.
