OCONEE HUMANE SOCIETY received $20,000 grant in 2024 to help more adoptable pets find people to love
SENECA, SC, March 20: Pets are family, and can bring hope, companionship and unconditional love to their people. Adopting a pet in need of a home can bring joy to people and also impact communities, alleviating strain on overcrowded shelters. That’s why Oconee Humane Society will bring adoptable pets to PetSmart 253 Applewood Center Place, Seneca, SC 29678, for PetSmart Charities® National Adoption Week, taking place March 24 – 30, 2025. OHS aims to find homes for a minimum of 3 dogs and 6 kittens/cats during the event.
OHS is solely responsible for saving, raising, treating, and foster/adopt homeless kittens, as the county Animal Shelter stopped kitten intake in 2021.
In 2024, 927 abandoned kittens were taken in, and a total of 1,111 cats/kittens were saved thru adoption, a 16% increase from 2023!
Significant effort is expended to care for these kittens, so we can bring them to exposure events, and this is where PetSmart funding comes into place.
- Raise intake kittens. It is very difficult to find fosters parents. A package including a carrier, formula, food, litter etc is many times a great motivator for a perspective foster. In addition, sustained foster parents support and education allows kittens to achieve spay/neuter age
- Vaccinate and spay/neuter kitties
- Get kitties adopted (expand adoption opportunities)
This is where PetSmart instore events exposure and tower availability are vital.
In 2024, 938 dogs were saved, a 36% increase from 2023!
Great effort is put into dog adoption readiness: intake dogs get medical attention and treatment, sometime surgery and they also get spayed/neutered. Their behavioral wellbeing is critical. Volunteers spend precious time in socializing and loving on our dogs.
Once they are deemed ready, we need exposure venues for their adoption.
This is where PetSmart instore events exposure is vital!
PetSmart Charities connects adoption partners such as Oconee Humane Society with local PetSmart stores to bring adoptable pets in for adoption events and meet and greets. These include pets of all ages, breeds, temperaments, and energy levels. Staff and volunteers are available to help make ideal matches considering lifestyle and other preferences such as energy levels, personalities, sizes, etc.
