Volunteer

Beyond pure financial support, OHS depends on a corps of dedicated animal loving volunteers who provide us with most of the labor to make the organization function.

If you are 18 or older and would like to spend it with others who have taken up the cause, we would very much appreciate your help.

Following are some areas in which we can use assistance; click on them to learn more:

If you would like to volunteer, please complete our online Volunteer Application (link below, and when you have completed the form, just hit Submit, and your application will be forwarded to our Volunteer Management Program.

When completing your application, please indicate your availability to work a minimum of 2 hours per week at a consistent time each week.  As an all volunteer organization, we need to ensure adequate staffing throughout our open hours.  Knowing your commitment to a regular time slot helps us balance our schedule of volunteers.  Thank you for your interest in OHS!

If you are seeking Community Service hours for a class, organization or program, please see the following guidelines for community service volunteers.  Since we are an all-volunteer organization with a limited number of consistent volunteers, we are unable to offer volunteer training to all students who need to provide community service hours. We have established the following guidelines for those who are able to comply:
  • All volunteers must complete our online Volunteer Application (see link above) prior to being scheduled for a mandatory volunteer training
  • Each volunteer must be prepared to engage in a minimum of 20 hours of volunteer service to be eligible for community service credit.  Community service hours will be signed off only upon completion of the full 20 hours.
  • Each volunteer applicant must identify, on their application, a consistent day and time that they will volunteer (This is necessary to prevent an overabundance of volunteers on any given day and to balance our staffing schedule  in order to provide appropriate supervision.
  • After the above steps are completed, one of our volunteer trainers will contact you to arrange a training session. For those interested in dog socialization, the orientation lasts approximately 1.5 hours.  For those interested in Cat Socialization, the orientation is typically 1 hour.  Community services credit will begin once the volunteer has successfully completed their orientation.
We understand that these requirements may be challenging for university students, but they are necessary for OHS to provide a safe and meaningful volunteer experience.
